+What are tuition costs at UBC?

Tuition costs are set set by UBC. For 09-10, they are:

Cost Per Credit
B.A.Sc. Applied Science (year 1) $147.65 per credit
B.A.Sc. Applied Science (years 2-5) $157.60 per credit
International Students $676.38 per credit

+What fees do I need to pay?

Fees paid by each student include mandatory fees such as Athletics/Rec and U-Pass, as well as fees you can opt-out of. Also, the EUS is partially funded from a student fee applied to your account every year.

Athletics & Recreation fee
$189.66
AMS fees
$327.31
Ubyssey Publication fee
$5.00
U-Pass fee (2 terms)
$190.00
Your EUS fee
$42.00
Total
$752.97

Our student society fee is a paltry $42 (compared to commerce’s $266!)

+How do I get some money back?

$241.31 of the $327.31 in fees charged under ‘AMS fees’ (including the health plan, campus newspaper, bursary fund, etc.), can be opted out of on the AMS website. This must be done in the beginning of the year! For instance, if you have health coverage through your parent’s employer plan, you could save over $200 a year if you prove to the AMS health insurance provider that you are already covered

Funding

+What are some other ways I can get money for activities on campus?

Professional Activities Fund (PAF)
If you have a great idea for an academic endeavor, or some project that can benefit UBC engineering and need funding, PAF can help! This is a fund that all undergraduate students pay into each year and is a valuable resource accessible by anyone! Applications can be found href=”http://www.engineering.ubc.ca/current_students/student_resources/paf-fund.php”>here.

+What are some other ways I can get money for activities more related to improving something in Engineering?

Endowment Fund
For not so academic endeavors that are still related out our faculty there is the Endowment Fund. Keep an eye out for applications and due dates on our website! Endowment fund applications are judged by the value added to the UBC Engineering community.

Reimbursement

+I’ve made a purchase for something EUS or Club related. How do I get my money back?

If you’ve made a purchase on behalf of the EUS, you are eligible for full reimbursement for your purchase. This applies to purchase of materials for competitions, supplies for events, gas money for driving to conferences, etc. Turn in your receipt with your full name and description of what the receipt is for to the VP Finance or the VP Finance drop box in the Cheeze. It will be processed within 4 business days and your money will be ready for pick-up at the AMS. If the amount is under $100, it will be returned to you in cash; over $100 will be a cheque. Remember to hold on to your receipts: reimbursements needed that don’t have some form of a receipt may be held by the AMS for as long as four weeks.

FREE MONEY

+ Scholarships

Doing well at school? Helping the community out? Taking time out of studies to get involved? There are people who will pay you for being a wonderful person in the form of scholarships!

Many of the engineering scholarships are poorly applied for so there’s no harm trying! There are also other in term scholarships available such the Millennium (based on well roundedness) and the Trek Excellence (given to the top 5% of students in each year of each faculty). Your grades also might be better than you think as they only take the top 27 credits into consideration for you GPA.

There are also the very handy sites:

+What other ways are there to find money on campus?

There are plenty of other ways to get some extra funding for you schooling, including student loans (often interest free), bursaries and work study options. Managing your budget is also a good idea; don’t be a burden on your parents!
