In January, 2011, a group of concerned engineering students formed an informal committee to investigate legally incorporating the Engineering Undergraduate Society (EUS) for the purpose of achieving greater operational efficiency. In March, 2011, this committee presented their initial findings to the EUS Board of Directors (the Board), and requested permission to continue their research. Last week, the Board voted to have the committee continue their investigation and finalize their findings. The Board also established a deadline for these findings of January 16, 2012 at which time the Board has agreed to vote on whether to put the option for incorporation forward to engineering students in the form of a referendum.
Given the importance of this investigation, the committee is carefully researching the financial and legal impacts of incorporation on the society, as well as establishing how on-campus relations will change with a new legal body. Of particular note, the EUS would not be segregating from the Alma Mater Society (AMS), and Engineering students would still remain AMS members in a model similar to that of the Graduate Student Society.
The EUS Board of Directors will next meet January 16, 2012.
