What is equity to the EUS? |
| The EUS strives to foster a diverse and inclusive community for students of all nationalities, gender, abilities, racial and ethnic backgrounds, sexual orientations and gender identities. By fostering an inclusive environment the EUS is creating an engineering culture where all members can live with equal respect and dignity. | ||
how is the EUS addressing equity? |
| The first step the EUS undertakes each year is to educate core representatives on equity and surrounding issues. The vice-presidents and president of the society all receive Equity and Positive Space training via the equity office at Brock hall. These workshops educate our members on equity, building an inclusive environment and handling situations which incorporate harassment or discrimination. Positive space training is an equity workshop which focuses on issues surrounding sexual orientation and gender identity. Any member of the EUS with a “positive space” patch has received this training and can assist students with finding resources to these related topics.
A new addition to our student building ‘The Cheeze’ is our equity section. This space will serve as a network for events and information that will interest all members and groups of the engineering community. The EUS is working closely with the Equity Office, Access and Diversity, Women in Engineering, Faculty and Student Development to bring about new ideas and initiatives on making engineering a more inclusive, educated and respectful culture. The EUS Equity Officer is responsible for organizing the equity training for the exec, dealing with equity complaints and facilitating initiatives regarding equity within engineering. |

How to get involved: |
| Building an inclusive and respectful environment can be done by anyone at anytime. Being respectful, mindful and recognizing the vast diversity of engineering students is a great start. The equity space in the Cheeze will serve as a great resource for additional equity information.
If you want to get further involved, there will be an equity council this year led by our equity officer – where students will be able to discuss these topics in respect to engineering. For further information please contact the EUS equity officer at equity@ubcengineers.ca |
have you experienced discrimination? |
| If you have experienced discrimination please contact the equity officer (equity@ubcengineers.ca) or equity office at Brock hall (equity@equity.ubc.ca) | ||
