The Following are the Candidates for the 2012-2013 Executive Election
President
Ian Campbell:
My name is Ian Campbell and I’m running to be your 2012-2013 EUS President! I’ve been working with the EUS for 3 years now, and I believe it’s time for me to step up to the highest level of volunteering we have. I care a great deal of this organization and will put everything I have into ensuring next year is the first of many stellar years to come.
The EUS is a rapidly changing organization right now. Construction is starting this year on a new engineering student centre (ESC) to replace the Cheeze and we need to be ready to occupy this new space. I also feel that even though the EUS has been trying to appeal to more students outside its traditional volunteer base, we aren’t necessarily taking the right approach right now to accomplish that. These issues are somewhat separate, but the EUS has a huge opportunity to go in a new direction this year. I want to get students excited about our organization so that we can stay strong going forward and build an even better community in the years to come. For more details on my platform and experience, please visit my campaign facebook event: http://on.fb.me/Ian4EUS. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or just want to chat. I can be reached via facebook, twitter (@ianFraserC), email (ianfrasercampbell@gmail.com), or phone (604-762-2796).
Vice President Communications
Alisa Yao:
My name is Alisa Yao, a 2nd year mining engineering student, and I am running to be your
EUS VP Communications for 2012-2013. With prior experience under the previous VP ComAd
portfolio as Handbuk Editor and PP Slipstick Rep, I believe I am the most appropriate candidate
for this exec position.
I want to be VP Communications because I would like to:
1. Improve communication between students and the EUS. This can be achieved with small
changes, such as with increased use of the exec blogs by moving it to the homepage of our
website so students can see the latest exec updates.
2. Improve publicity of events by having publicity representatives do classroom speeches (with
professors’ permission) as well as posters because not everyone reads posters.
3. Create a smoother transition between CMs and X-Os by creating a database of transition
reports and files that can be accessed by the current and previous CMs. An example of this
would be having designated dropbox folders for the Handbuk and Slipstick Editors to work out
of.
I look forward to serving you in 2012-2013 as EUS VP Communications. Please vote for me
March 12-16.
Vice President Administration
Graham Beales:
I am the candidate running to be your very first Vice President of Administration, and will take over
this role for the 2012-2013 year.
As this is a new position within your Engineering Undergraduate Society, (EUS) I will be defining the
role for years to come, and using my previous experience helping to run the administrative side of the
EUS I intend to set the bar as high as possible. For those unfamiliar with the changes in the executive
portfolio of the EUS, the VP Administration will be responsible for:
− Organizing the recruitment of the EUS’ volunteers.
− Ensuring the maintenance of the EUS’ space and records.
− Overseeing the Secretary, Cheeze Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, and Bookings
Representative.
− All general administrative duties of the EUS.
On top of this the EUS will be moving into a temporary location over the coming year while we build
the new Engineering Student Center, (ESC), and we will be moving into the new building as soon as
it’s construction is completed. I will be working to make this move as simple as possible with as grand
a temporary location as we may possibly have.
I look forward to serving you as your VP Administration in the year to come, and I thank everyone who
offers me their vote of confidence. If you have any questions, or just want to hear about who I am feel
free to ask! I can be reached via Facebook, email: gbeales@gmail.com or phone: (604) 362-3671.
Thanks!
- Graham
—— My Platform ——
− Document the new position of VP Administration and everything it entails.
− Provide an easy, organized transition into our temporary space, and then the new ESC.
− Complete the copy of the EUS’ records to a digital format.

—— Community Involvement ——
2011-2012
− EUS Secretary
− EUS Bookings Representative
− Sigma Phi Delta Secretary, (Elected Executive Position)
− EUS Red Sales Assistant
− Engineering A-Team (Ambassador Team)
2010-2011
− First Year Council Secretary
− UBC Orientations Leader
− A volunteer at many miscellaneous events
Vice President External
Will McEwan:
Hello, I am Will McEwan, and I am running to be your Vice President External for the
coming school year. I am currently in my fourth year in engineering, and have been
heavily involved with many sides of the EUS throughout those years. I hope to put my
experience to work for you next year as your VP-External. The EUS VP External’s
portfolio is extremely varied, and has many opportunities to make a large impact on
student life, and my goal is to ensure that, as VP External, more engineering students at
UBC can reap the benefits of my work.
Some of my goals for the coming year are to ensure that our annual career fair continues
to grow and serve more engineering students from all of the disciplines of engineering
offered at UBC, to maintain a strong presence with our regional and national engineering
student governing bodies, WESST and CFES respectively, and ensure that these
organizations are heading in a direction that benefits engineering students at UBC.
Finally, I will continue to work with APEGBC, and try to expand on the services that
they offer through their student membership program, while increasing awareness of the
services they currently offer, including industry mixers and information sessions.
In addition to the VP External portfolio, I plan on using my experience with the EUS to
work with the other executive to help guide our student society into the future to be able
to offer more to students.
I look forward to serving you next year as your VP External!
Ellie Crux:
I’m Ellie Crux, and you probably know me best as the PP council Vice President, a position which
taught me many valuable skills and exposed me to the workings of the EUS. I also represented UBC
Engineering at the CFES congress in January. CFES congress was a great opportunity at which I
gained many leadership skills and learned about the CFES and WESST. During my time at CFES
congress I also got the opportunity to observe our current VP External, Alex Lush and several other VP
Externals from other universities across Canada. I believe these experiences and other qualities such as
my dedication, leadership and enthusiasm make me an ideal candidate for the position of VP External.
If elected, I hope to continue some of the fantastic work which the VP Externals have been doing for
the past few years. This includes working with industry to ensure that engineering students get ample
opportunity to work with industry, continue our relationships with external organizations, and make
sure that we continue having the best possible representation at conferences. I hope to expand our work
with industry and get more students involved in these events which I believe are of great interest to
them. External events such as conferences, competitions and interactions with alumni are of great value
to the development of students and I will do my most diligent work to encourage my fellow students to
participate and inform them of the opportunities available to them.
Vice President Academic
Lara Backer:
Hi! My name is Lara Backer. I’m a fourth year Fizzer, and I’m running to be your VP Academic
for the next year.
My platform can be summarized in a few points:
Engineering student services reform. A large number of recommendations have been made previously
by students, including ideas on making the ESS more accessible and efficient, and improving the quality
of web-based communication. I aim to ensure that these recommendations have been carried out, and
to survey Engineering students to discover if there are further areas to improve on for transfer credits,
advising, student development, or other programs handled by the ESS.
Implementing an Engineering-wide Exam database that is mutually agreeable to both faculty and
students. A course directory has been brought up previously, and I am planning to continue the work that
has been started on it. The math club has a running exam database which has gone over excellently, and I
propose to implement something similar.
Working with the Student Development Office to improve tutoring by facilitating an engineering peer
tutoring service, which could target student’s specific course concerns, in addition to the midterm and
final tutoring sessions that the EUS currently offers.
I also hope to work on continuing initiatives begun by previous VP Academics, such as First Year
Curriculum Reform.
I’ve previously volunteered as Professional Relations Manager, liaising with APEGBC, and am currently
the Fizz president. Both roles have taught me how to get projects done effectively, and have helped
me begin to form invaluable connections with the Faculty. If you want to find out more about me or
want to ask questions, feel free to email me at lara.camille@gmail.com, or visit my website, http://
www.phas.ubc.ca/~lbacker. I’m very approachable, and would love to hear any feedback or ideas that you
might have!
Vice President Student Life
Dusan Milovanovic:
My name is Dusan Milovanovic and I’m running to be your 2012-2013 EUS VP Student Life! As the
current Associate VP Events, and a member of the Spirit Committee, I have learned a great deal about
the Student Life portfolio and am excited for an opportunity to step up to the role of VP.
As event attendance has declined in recent years, and with the coming demolition of the Cheeze, the
tried and true formula for Cheeze Events is no longer feasible. What this provides, however, is a fresh
start to the portfolio and a chance for us to showcase our Engineering pride, and presence, elsewhere
on campus. It is a year of transition, and I look to this as an opportunity to expand on our diehard fan
base and bring that sense of Engineering spirit to the rest of the society.
I look forward to guiding the society during this transition through better event and volunteer
coordination, improving the administrative side and transparency of Engineering Week, and boosting
faculty, and departmental pride.
If you want to find out more about my platform, feel free to contact me with any questions, comments,
concerns, or even just to chat. I can be reached via facebook, email (milovanovicd@gmail.com), or by
phone (778-327-8007).
Vice President Finance
Sean Morgan Anderson:
Total Financial Transparency:
If you want to know how the EUS’s money (read: your student fees) is being spent, you deserve to know.
Being personally accountable for the budget, and having a transparent paper trail are important features of
my campaign platform.
Open Reporting:
As VP Finance, I will endeavour to make regular tEUSday meeting updates, filling you in on how the
aforementioned budget is being spent.
Budget Optimisation:
I will insure that the coming year’s budget remains relevant to the entire student body of engineering; as
well as seeing that it is spent as efficiently as possible.
Timely Reimbursements:
I will make sure that any and all personal reimbursements are handled as quickly as possible by dealing
with them within a twenty-four hour period.
About Me:
I am a second year Mining student, and I have previously been involved in the EUS. In my first year, I
was the Publicity Representative for the PP Council; some of you may have vague recollections of me
shouting at you from the front of a PHYS 153 lecture.
I try to introduce myself by my full name when I meet people.
I am a member of the Sigma Phi Delta Engineering Fraternity.
When I am not busy with Engineering work (school related or otherwise), I tend to play video games, go
running and catch up on sleep.
I can be contacted for any election related inquiry at seanmorgananderson (at) gmail (dot) com, or
followed on twitter @SeanMorganAnder
Lisa Lee:
Hello, my name is Lisa Lee and I am looking to be your next Vice President Finance for
the Engineering Undergraduate Society.
A bit of info about myself: I am currently a first year student in engineering here at UBC.
Since September, I am part of the First Year Council as a voting member. I have upheld
the responsibilities of attending meetings, conducting and organizing awesome EUS
events. Beyond my general involvement with the council, I volunteered extensively within
the engineering community.
Outside of EUS, I volunteered extensively with Rotary International and the local
Rotaract Organization; worked with Women In Engineering on the Student Council team;
am an active mentor for the Brooks and County mentorship program; recently, I have
also joined the Thunderbolts team and am an active member of the Admin team.
The platform and ideas on which I am running is based on the following points:
1) Breaking the Walls: As VP Finance, I will seek to make EUS more transparent and
friendly as a whole to ensure all engineering students have the chance to participate and
get involved with the organization.
2) Financially Sound: As your VP Finance, I want to make sure all the ideas and new
initiatives by students are financially well supported. And that no ideas should be shut
down due to the lack of funding..
3) Engineering Pride: One of the most important thing for me to focus on next year, as
VP Finance will be increasing the sense of Engineering pride among all engineering
students here at UBC.
I believe that my strong leadership skills, EUS involvement and extensive volunteer
experience make me an excellent candidate to represent you, the student population, as
the 2012-2013 Vice President Finance.
Thank you for taking the time to read my platform and feel free to message me if you
have any questions, comments or ideas.

AMS Representative
Hans Seidemann:
My name is Hans Seidemann, and I’m running again this year to be your Engineering Representative to the Alma Mater Society (AMS).
As we all know, Engineering is one of the most active faculties on campus. Our EUS offers more services than many larger departments, and soon we will have a brand new student center, paid for and managed by engineering students. As our parent body, the AMS has a major part to play in how the EUS conducts its business, and as the EUS continues to grow and provide more services to students, this relationship will become ever more important. As your AMS Rep, I would work hard to maintain and improve our AMS Relations, to ensure that Engineering has every opportunity to thrive and grow.
Additionally, over the past year I’ve served as the AMS Rep for Engineering, I’ve worked hard to represent the interests of engineering students to the broader campus. I’ve spent time building relationships on council so that I can bring forward the concerns of engineering students, and make sure that those concerns are heard and acted upon. That said, I’ve also been willing to stand up in opposition to council when decisions have been made that I know wouldn’t meet the approval of my constituents.
I firmly believe that it is my ability to be a strong voice for constituents, while also engendering co-operation among those I work with, which makes me an excellent choice for your AMS Rep. So between March 12th and 16th make sure to vote, and re-elect me as your Engineering AMS Rep.

Jennifer Law:
I’m Jennifer Law in 2nd year Civil Engineering and I’m running to be your EUS AMS Rep for 2012/2013!
As a student in UBC, I am aware that AMS is a huge influence on student life and I believe that engineers should be a part of this big picture.
I am a responsible person who would like to see through the current issues of the student body with the AMS and make decisions that would benefit our engineering society. I am willing to listen to your suggestions and opinions towards improving student life. It would be my pleasure to answer your questions and inform you about the workings and happenings of the AMS and EUS.
And of course, I promise to work together with the AMS diligently and communicate the issues and plans of the AMS efficiently with the engineering society. I want the best for engineers and I will work hard to get results.
More info about me…
I am currently helping out the Volunteer Coordinator (Nicholas Zeng) in the EUS as his assistant and I have been volunteering a lot of random events this year. Hopefully you have seen me around and maybe said hi to me. I’m always happy and free to meet new people and old friends. Additionally, I am currently Social Coordinator for UBC Kendo and have been organizing events to improve the relations between new members and seniors. It is my belief that networking is the key to everything. Please come and say hi to me whenever you can
David Lee:
In my 3 years as a UBC engineer, I have gained invaluable real world experience on my co-op work terms, as well as practical leadership experience as President of the Fair Vote UBC club during my 1st year, and Software Team Lead for the UBC Sailbot Team.
Over the next year the EUS will look to improve its relations with the AMS to ensure that it functions in the best interests of engineering students. In particular we will be negotiating how the EUS can direct management of the new Engineering Student Center and businesses like Red Sales. I believe I have the patience and composure to steer a smooth transition during this period of change.
I am passionate about transparency and accountability, and I will strive to ensure that you are kept informed about your student government.
I am eager to represent all engineers and speak on your behalf on this year’s AMS council. Please vote for me starting March 12th.
All the best,
David Lee
