So Bob Orlando has suggest what may be the best idea to come out of the Events portfolio.

This year, and years in the past, we’ve used microbrews at our events. They have the best quality/cost ratio and it helps support the Vancouver beer seen. Thus far this year we’ve been using Storm Brewing (Who are excellent BTW), but we want to see if they’re truly the best.

What Bob has suggested is that at the start of each school year (and possibly this Jan) we have a beer tasting festival. We bring out a tonne of microbrews from around the lower mainland and let you all decide which you like best. The winner of this competition will get our sole business for the school year. We hope that doing this will both add a completely new event to Events portfolio, and maybe save the EUS some money. This savings would of course be passed on to you…..

IN THE FORM OF LOONIE LAGER.

What do you guys think?

The UBC Engineering Competition (UBCEC), held here at UBC on November 13th, is a day of engineering challenges hosted annually by the EUS. Categories include Junior Design, Senior Design, Consulting Engineering, Engineering Communications, Impromptu Design, and Innovative Design.  For more info on each event and how to register, click here.  For general guidelines and registration info, click here.

UBCEC is also the prequalification for WEC. The Western Engineering Competition (WEC) is a highly prestigious competition between engineering students from the nine different universities in Western Canada.  All 6 events which are contested at WEC will be held at UBCEC; the top 1 or 2 winning teams from each event moves on to participate in WEC, which will be held at the University of Saskatchewan from January 26th to January 30th.

Are you thinking about going to graduate school?  The University of Waterloo is starting a new Masters Program in Business Entrepreneurship and Technology and are looking for new students for their university.  They are holding an information session on the 29th, Wednesday from 6-8pm, at Macleod 214.

The results are in for the 2010 PP Council Elections!  Click here to find out who you’re new first year council is!

The PP (first year) Council is the student government of first year engineers, with the PP Council President sitting on the EUS Board of Directors. The PP council is given a budget, some advice and guidance from the EUS President, and access to tons of support, and then they are let loose! From paintballing to poker parties, any event that the council comes up with and is willing to organize can be done. The council also sees to the Academic and Professional concerns of first years. Being part of council is a great way to get involved without a ton of time committed, meet a large number of first years, and develop your leadership skills.

Nomination forms are currently being accepted for the 2010/2011 PP Council; for more details, click here.  For a full list of all positions, click here.

Voting day is scheduled for the 24th of September!

Imagine day has arrived!  And with it, the beginning of the best Frosh week UBC has to offer, Engineering Frosh 2010!  Jam-packed with events of all kinds, first years are encouraged to come check out all of our events, with upper years welcome as well.

And of course, with a start of a new year, we also go through another year of jealous students from other faculties besmirching our cairn.

This year however, those unfortunate students will have far more surface to cover.  Students at large have modified the cairn, however the change is rather less noticeable until you get close up;  the Cairn has grown in size by about 2 feet.

Significantly wider, taller, and bigger than it was before,  the EUS is currently looking for first years to become Keepers of the Cairn to help keep the grandeur of this Cairn intact.

Students interested in becoming keepers of the Cairn are encouraged to contact the VP Events at vpevents@ubcengineers.ca.
