Last Saturday, 170 of the best and brightest in UBC Engineering designed machines, gave presentations, took part of debates, practiced engineering consulting and pitched innovative ideas to judges and their peers in hopes of winning UBCEC and advancing to the Western Engineering Competition. Congratulations to all of the participants and the winners!
UBCEC is an annual competition run by the Engineering Undergraduate Society that features 6 competitions: Junior Design, Senior Design, Consulting, Impromptu Debate, Communications and Innovative Design (See here for more details on each competition: http://www.ubcengineers.ca/events/conferences-competitions/the-ubc-engineering-competitionubcec/). Teams in each category compete and are judged by a panel of alumni, faculty and industry judges, this year featuring guests such as Jeff Holm (APEGBC President) and Dr. Bruce Dunwoody (Associate Dean).
Winning teams qualify to advance to the Western Engineering Competition (WEC), a similar competition between all western Canadian schools, this year held at the University of Calgary. Winning WEC then qualifies the student teams to the Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC). Pressure is high for the winners of UBCEC this year as CEC is being hosted by UBC here in Vancouver, and there are many hopes of a strong delegation of competitors from UBC winning WEC to represent UBC on home turf.
CEC Organizer and past CEC Senior Design Champion, Eric Pospisil is extremely excited for the competition in March stating that the planning is full on under way with more details located at www.cec2012.ca. He also has advice for UBCEC winners as they move onto WEC: “Your presentation is key for all of the competitions. A good presentation will leave judges impressed and satisfied with your solution, and impressed and satisfied judges are known to award higher scores in all of the categories. Spend some time in advance working on your presentation skills, and show up well dressed (business attire) for WEC.”
If you want to get involved with CEC planning or even just volunteering the day of, Eric is always looking for more enthusiastic volunteers who would like to get involved with this exciting project. You can email Eric at eric@cec2012.ca.
