Welcome to the incoming First Year and Transfer Undergraduate Engineering Students and Welcome Back to returning students. The Cheeze is clean. Frosh Kits are packed. Frosh Shirts are ready to go! Your EUS Executive and volunteers look forward to seeing you all at the Cheeze and other events during the coming weeks! Check out the Frosh Schedule online or pick up a copy of the schedule from the nEUSpaper available at the Cheeze.

Come by the Cheeze during the Faculty Fair and take advantage of the Frosh Week Red Sales Subsidy on red jackets, pay for your Frosh Retreat Registration, or learn about getting involved with the EUS or other engineering groups at UBC. And don’t miss the First Year Imagine Day BBQ at the Cheeze 6pm sponsored by Prep 101. Free burgers for first year engineering students! There will also be a presentation from last year’s First Year Council on some of their experiences from the 2010/11 year.

For all fans of gaming at the cheeze, you should know by now that our Puzzle Fighter machine went offline due to a power failure sometime last month, and has remained so ever since. Instead of getting it professionally repaired, I’m going to be replacing it with a MAME system. MAME stands for “Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator,” meaning it can synthesize the hardware of countless arcade machines while running on a Windows or DOS-based PC. Everything will function like a normal arcade machine, but by opening it and doing a little typing, I can switch which game is available for play (or make the master list public). Here are a few pictures of what’s working so far:

The monitor can be hooked into any computer running special some video tweaking software with VGA-out, but right now the only method of input is a keyboard. I need to either build or purchase a keyboard encoder to get the joysticks and buttons to work with the computer, but that’s pretty easy to do. Any game that MAME supports can currently be played though. The only major issue I’m having is that even though the video signal is being amplified, the screen is still somewhat dim.

As always, arcade games are free at the cheeze. However, this system won’t be publicly available until further notice (not being done and all). Once it is though, come by for a round!

Its that time of year again!  Time for the Engineer’s to show all of campus what true christmas spirit is all about!  Armed with a large list of different Christmas Carols and songs, lead by Santa, Mrs. Claus, and the incredible Godiva Band, and filled with eggnog and Christmas cheer, UBC Engineers will be caroling all around campus on the last day of classes.  Students are highly recommended to wear their Reds (or at least a Red coloured jacket).

Students will be gathering at the Cheeze from 7-8am, and 8-12pm all around campus.

clubroomcrawl_logo_low Come tour all of the engineering clubrooms to help with your decision of which department to choose!

Each departmental club will have fun activities and/or presentations that showcase what’s special about that program. First years get the opportunity to ask questions of senior students who have been through everything before.

The first tour leaves at 3:30 pm sharp and the last tour leaves at around 4:00 pm.

Meet at the Cheeze and split up into groups, after which a tour guide will lead your group around for some good times. Hope to see you all there!

We ended last term with Christmas Caroling, bringing out a ton of engineers to spread cheer all around campus. We also witnessed the revival of the Godiva band, performing all of the carols we sang, further enhancing the good times felt by everyone there. But alot happened first term, with too many social events to count. Here’s looking back at some of the events term 1 held. (more…)

With almost 1000 dollars raised so far (and many social lives ruined), UBC Engimos are raising awareness for men’s health issues through Movember, by growing mustaches in order to raise money to fund research in the fight against prostate cancer.  This Monday is the last day of Movember, so break out your wallet/checkbook/credit card, head over to the UBC Engimos Movember page, and show your support for a great cause!

The EUS is hosting a Movember Charity Auction this Friday at 5PM at the Cheeze!

Movember is a global movement that is bringing much needed attention to prostate cancer and men’s health issues.  Grow a moustache through the month of Movember (formerly known as November), and collect donations! All donations and proceeds from the auction will go to Prostate Cancer Canada(for a full list of the items being auctioned, click “more”).  We will also be having a beer garden, starting at 7; all profits also go to Prostate Cancer Canada.
