This is a tradition of UBC Engineering from the years past. It is not a form of hazing, rather a rite of passage of which the participants have choosen to undergo. Performance of an improper tanking is a tankable offence, for both traditional and safety reasons.

Tanking is not an initiation, and you can refuse to be tanked if you want. Females are must be given 24 hours notice before tanking.
