President [president@ubcengineers.ca] – Amanda Li

Amanda Li

Hello!

Welcome to the new and exciting 2010-2011 year in UBC engineering. As students in this wonderful faculty, you are part of the Engineering Undergraduate Society and I have the great honour to be your President. From helping your professional development, providing you academic services and throwing you a wide variety of amazing social events, the EUS executives and volunteers are here to help make this year exceptional.

As President, my job is to oversee the direction of the society, manage the powerhouse executive team shown in the pages coming and to represent you to external organizations such as the AMS and faculty. With our new vision statement in place, pushing for a more multi-faceted EUS, my job will be to ensure that we are moving to provide a community that best fits your needs. This process of course will be much faster if everybody helps out. Here’s how:

• Get Involved! No, really. The EUS is a great place to start, but there are endless opportunities: engineering student teams, departmental clubs, Engineers Without Borders, The Vancouver Student’s Entrepreneurship Association, sports teams and so much more. These are the places you will make the memories and the networks.

• Explore! There are so many things going on at once at UBC. Try to figure out what is available to you and use it to your advantage! This still applies if you are a senior student as the university is ever changing to do more. You never know what scholarships, great guest speakers, themed parties or free lunches you can find! A great place to start is your e-nEUS, which delivers all engineering-related news right to your inbox every week.

• Give Feedback! There was no VP Academic within the EUS until a few years ago because students spoke out for stronger academic representation. There was no Imagine UBC or Gala awhile back until students spoke out for a better first-year orientation! You can help make your community so much better for both yourself and those years to come.

Of course there is so much more that can be said so if you feel like it, come find me and talk to me! I am a student just like you – I’m in 4th year Mechatronics and I love to meet new people, ballroom dance, ski and help build soccer playing robots. You can email me, find me around Kaiser or the Cheeze, visit my office hours or add me as a friend on Facebook!

Cheers,

Amanda Li

VP External [vpexternal@ubcengineers.ca] – Daniel Olson

Dan Olson

Aloha!

I hope the summer treated you well. Welcome back to another year of lectures, labs, assignments, reports, presentations, and exams. One of the best parts of starting school each year is the chance to refocus and put a bad term or a bad mark behind you and optimistically look ahead.

When industry representatives come to recruit UBC Engineers they often mention how they are looking for students with good communication skills. The VP External Affairs provides students with opportunities to develop these skills and make connections to groups external to UBC. These external organizations include industry, alumni, the Canadian Federation of Engineering Students (CFES), Western Engineering Student Societies Team (WESST), and the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC). Watch your e-nEUS for upcoming industry, professional and alumni events as well as conferences and the Engineer Your Career Fair during E-Week.

Sign up and practice your design and presentation skills at the EUS’ annual UBC Engineering Competition held in November. There are several different events which feature thinking on your feet and communicating effectively. Registration information should be available in October.

Have a great year and don’t forget to have some fun. There are a lot of opportunities to supplement your education here at UBC. Don’t let them pass you by.

VP Communications & Administration [vpcomad@ubcengineers.ca] – Will Gallego

WillHi, my name is Will and I’m addicted to Diet Coke.

Seriously. I have a problem. Ask anyone who knows me, the stuff is like crack to me.

Anyways, I will be the EUS VP Communications & Administration for this upcoming year. I’m in charge of handling all aspects of the society’s communications (pretty posters!), including e-nEUS, the electronic newsletter that gets sent out weekly to all engineering students. I also take care of the society’s bookings, meetings, and student space.

I highly encourage you to come check out the tEUSday meetings this year. They’re fun, informational sessions where you can find out what’s happening in engineering at UBC. With free pop provided, they are held on Tuesdays at noon, in the Cheeze. If you are interested in the more serious aspects of the society, feel free to stop by the bi-weekly council meetings on Mondays in the SUB council chambers. They’ve got free food, and we love to see students come out and give us their feedback.

I’m currently in my fourth year at UBC, loving ECE. I spend most of my free time in the Cheeze, so come by, grab some super cheap pop and hang out.

VP Academic [vpacademic@ubcengineers.ca] - Nick Sertic

Nick Sertic

Greetings fellow engineers!

I am very excited to be serving as your VP Academic! In this position, I oversee the plethora of academic services that the Engineering Undergraduate Society offers, including our tutoring sessions, scholarships, course database, and seminar series. I also have the pleasure of working closely with E-Team, who provide software training sessions, health workshops, first-year BBQs, and other events. In addition, I act as a liaison between students and the APSC faculty to raise concerns regarding curriculum and co-op. If you have an issue, idea, or suggestion, email vpacademic@ubcengineers.ca, attend one of our Beef & Pizza sessions, or talk to me in person (look for the tall guy wearing bright green converse).

I am in my fifth and final year of Engineering Physics (lovingly known as Fizz) in the Mechanical Option and am hoping to enter the space industry upon graduation. I am a huge Muse fan, avid supporter of Google, recreational Ultimate Frisbee player, 1337 Commander Keener, and proudly wear Sesame Street t-shirts. If you make a measurement of my position, there’s a high probability you’ll find me in the Fizz Penthouse studying or playing Settlers of Catan – so drop by and be my friend!

VP Events [vpevents@ubcengineers.ca] – Nigel Myers

VP EVENTS

Who the hell are we? Engineers! Who the hell am I? My name’s Nigel Myers and I’m your VP Events for the 2010/2011 school year. I am in Mechanical Engineering and a member of the Sigma Phi Delta Engineering Fraternity. I love all sorts of sports and DIY is my favourite 3 letter word. As VP Events my job is to ensure all your social needs are met. My two biggest tasks are planning Frosh Week and E-Week. I’m going to make sure they’re both gong shows with a little bit of cowbell thrown in for good measure. Outside of these two weeks of fury I get to plan the various themed parties and sporting events we’ve become famous for.

During my time at UBC I’ve yet to find a faculty with as much spirit and pride as we have. E-Ball, Opening Ceremonies, Frosh Retreat, and the list goes on. Each of these events showcase just exactly how unified we are. Our traditions are epic, our history is vast, and in the words of the Dropkick Murphys “Your spirit’s alive.” So come out, get involved, and have a blast. Trust me, you won’t forget or regret it.

VP Finance [vpfinance@ubcengineers.ca] – Brian Lee

VP FINANCE

Hi everybody, and welcome to UBC Engineering! My name’s Brian and I’m your VP Finance this year. My role in the EUS is to handle any sort of financial transactions that occur over the year and manage the EUS’ businesses. I also maintain the budget that the EUS follows and track where money goes and comes from. I basically take care of the EUS’ money and work with the other executives to make sure that our money is being spent wisely.

As for EUS businesses, this year I’m going to be managing and expanding Red Sales (the Engineering paraphernalia store) and our fences. Both businesses offer a great opportunity for the EUS to spread Engineering awareness across campus and Red Sales has that unique ability to promote unity and pride amongst us Engineers, a staple element of the EUS for many, many years.

This year, I plan on making sure that the EUS can run as flawlessly as it can financially so that there is never a monetary roadblock for all the services that it can provide for you, the students.
