Chemical & Biological Engineering [chbepresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Calvin Chan

Hello new and returning engineers! My name is Calvin Chan and I am the Chemical and Biological Engineering (CHBE) Club President for this year.
Chemical engineering is a diverse discipline found in all sectors of the industry. Chemical engineers commonly specialize in oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, biotechnologies, food processing, clean energy, water treatment and environmental remediation and protection. In short, we are needed wherever a chemical process exists.
UBC CHBE has a world-renowned chemical engineering program and is one of the first to recognize the importance of including biological engineering in the traditional chemical engineering program. Students could complete the traditional chemical engineering program or specialize in biological processes and environmental controls.
The CHBE Building is one of the best on campus. Students spend most of their time on the 3rd floor, which is reserved to undergraduates only. Our clubroom is also located on this floor and is equipped with comfy couches, a foosball table, food and drinks vending machines and a N64.
CHBE hosts frequent BBQ outside our building and two large social events annually: Mexichem and Kamanawanalaya. Keep an eye out for these events and come enjoy drinks and food optimized to make your taste buds go wild!
Civil Engineering [civilpresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Alexander Szymanski

Hallo!
My name is Alexander Szymanski and I am your Civil Engineering Club President for the 2010-2011.
Civil Engineering is a branch of engineering that has the most diverse options in an applied field such as concrete, construction, engineering materials, environmental, geotechnical, structural, and transportation. If that’s not enough to keep you busy Civil Engineering offers two professional learning opportunities where you can have fun while doing so! Join the Concrete Toboggan or Steel Bridge team (or both!) and discover what they’re all about. However, you might need to relax every so often throughout the year. We offer every escapist a chance to kick back and relax, so come on out and stay a while at our BBQs, Halloween Party, Christmas Party, and Beereoke. Keep your eyes peeled for these events and get involved.
The Civil Engineering Club has several facilities that offer to make this year go by as smoothly as possible. We have the Design Studio complete with lots of study space and a printing service. There is the Loft, a favourite social space with foosball table, microwave, fridge, couches, and our infamous vending machines. This is located on the second floor of CEME in room 2215. We also have lockers for rent by the semester at cheap rates.
Take ‘er easy.
Electrical & Computer Engineering (http://www.ece.ubc.ca/~studentsociety/) [eecepresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Yang Zhang

Size does matter; don’t let anyone tell you differently.
With over 900 students, the ECE Department is the largest program in UBC Engineering. This means that we have the most resources for our students to pursue their innovations that range from autonomous robots to computer games and the processors they run on.
Along the way there’s the ECE Student Society (aka ECE Klub) to make the journey a little more bearable, because as students we know how hard ECE student life can be. My name is Yang Zhang, ECE Klub president, and I am happy to welcome all new and returning students back for another year of torture studies. I am proud to say the ECE Klub still has the best lounge in Engineering, with pool, foosball, cable TV, a surround sound system and leather couches. ECE Klub also runs social events like Ohmcoming, the Christmas Party and much more. Last year we narrowly missed a victory for E-Week, which is something we need to rectify this year. Outside the social world, we will continue helping students both academically and professionally through tutoring and industry networking. I look forward to the coming year and helping ECE take over as the best department in Engineering!
Engineering Physics [fizzpresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Dan Came

Hi all,
Welcome to an exciting year in UBC Engineering!
Engineering Physics is a challenging program that tests the limits of your intellect and imagination. Starting with the Eng Phys (or Fizz) robot design course/competition in second year and continuing with senior Project Lab courses, Fizzers are given free rein to bring their ideas to life. A strong background from Physics, Math and Engineering courses ensures that Eng Phys students graduate with the skills and experience to continue on the cutting edge of any field they choose. What’s not to like?
With the level of work involved, it’s important to find time to relax! As such, it’s my job as President of Fizz to make sure that in addition to academic events like our Seminar Series, we also have a wide range of social events. They include Beer Gardens, LAN Parties, Storm the Pit and, of course, the famous Annual Fizz Social Night. On top of that, we enjoy dedicated student space known as the Penthouse, occupying the top floor of Hebb Building (the view is awesome.) Drop by sometime; we’d love to see you. Cheers!
Environmental Engineering [enviropresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Nicole Winstley

Welcome everyone! Whether you’re here for the first time or finishing up your (hopefully) last year, have an awesome one! I’m Nicole Winstanley and I’ll be the president of the Environmental Engineering Students’ Association for this year.
The environmental engineering program is a joint degree between the University of Northern BC and UBC with 1st/2nd year up in Prince George, 3rd/4th year here at UBC and a final industry-focused semester at UNBC. In the end, you get a degree from two, count ‘em, TWO universities.
Environmental engineering is an emerging field which gives us broad training civil and chemical engineering with a dash of mining and geological thrown in. From there, you can specialize in practically anything you want to: sustainable design, soil and groundwater contamination, green energy – the possibilities are endless! We’re a very small, tight-knit group of students so it’s easy to get to know all the ENVEs and our profs. If you’d like to know more about our program or just drop by for a bevy, we’re on the 3rd floor of the CHBE building and have some amazingly comfortable couches. Come by and see us any time!
Geological Engineering [geopresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Meredith Kealty & Caleb Scott

Welcome back “geers”! We are the GEOROX DREAM TEAM of 2010/2011!!!! Geological Engineering integrates Civil & Mining Engineering with Geology & Environmental Science to create an exciting and dynamic field with a healthy dose of the outdoors!! Our students and grads work locally and globally to design TUNNELS, build DAMS, study LANDSLIDES, remediate CONTAMINATION, and tackle GROUNDWATER resource challenges! GeoRox holds many events such as barbeques, movie nights, and camping trips (the only engineering club that does!). We also run industry nights and boast the best sports teams!! The GeoRox club room, in EOS Rm 308, is the biggest and best of any club at UBC, with a pool table, foosball, big screen tv, study spaces, and a boat load of comfy couches! Second year Geo’s can look forward to the brand new ROX FROSH 2010! We also hope to see all engineers out at our annual “On the Rox” event coming in the spring of 2011!!
ROCK ON!
Integrated Engineering [igenpresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Kimberly Dioszeghy

Hey IGENeers!

Materials Engineering [mtrlpresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Bridget Nahirny

Materials engineering not only encompasses the first four floors of the frank forward building (sorry mining), but is probably the best department in engineering. You will soon learn this after spending some time hanging out in our fancy computer lab and study room or checking out the MTRL Club Room, equipped with THREE foosball tables!
We are not only known for our foosball abilities but for the great atmosphere within our department. Making friends is easy in a small department like Materials, and you will also have the chance to say “Hi” to most of your profs in the hallways of Frank Forward. Materials engineering is also one of the most versatile fields, having courses relevant to mining, chemical and mechanical engineering.
We’re looking forward to having a great 2010 with a number of free barbeques, industry nights (also with free food) and various other dinner events and parties. We also have our annual (and mandatory) third and fourth year field trips to Toronto and Portland happening, which usually turn out to be a little more than just educational experiences.
I’m excited to see all the new first years around. And incoming second years, be prepared to learn what you’re made of. I hope you all have a wonderful year!
Mechanical Engineering [mechpresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Kyle Philibert
I’m Kyle, this year’s Club Mech Prez.
We have an awesome year lined up for Mech. We have a few major events in the works: Mechstravaganza is making its way back, and we’ll have the second annual Thomas Ludwicki Cancer Research Fundraiser (a complete success last year!). We also plan on getting our weekly/biweekly/monthly/whenever parties back in stride and of course there are all the fundraisers and feedback sessions with our awesome and very receptive faculty. Don’t forget that Club Mech has loads of couches, a kitchen (read: *Microwaves*), video games, CHEAP vendies and two foos tables! Come check us out; there’s always someone willing to hang out (or even just help with homework)!
Let’s get ready for a great year, and I’ll see you around!
Mining Engineering [minepresident@ubcengineers.ca] – Peter Klaponski

Mining is not for everyone, but those who like it… like it a lot! We in mining engineering are a smaller and very close-knit community both inside and outside of our studies at UBC. Focused on truly preparing us for our future, our experienced professors get fully involved in student life and are constantly with us at events as well as always open to answer questions or provide guidance on a first name basis.
I I am very excited to welcome new and return miners into our fantastic department and the best advice I can give is to get out there and have some fun with your classmates. I will also encourage those with an interest in mining to come by to find myself or another student in mining to find out more and perhaps experience just a little bit of what it is to be a mining engineer.
