The new exec have been keeping busy this month, a couple weeks ago we were all up at SFU for the Western Engineering Student Societies Team Executives Meeting (WESST EM). It was a great experience where we got to meet representatives from the western schools while absorbing valuable information and learning new skills. Dan and I attended the APEGBC President’s dinner last night, where we got to hear from David Podmore, one of the main people involved with the new BC Place!

In case you’re on campus this summer and need somewhere to chill, the Cheeze will be open! Summer hours are Monday-Thursday from 9AM to 6PM. If you do stop by, make sure to respect the space and clean up after yourselves.

FROSH IS IN 3 MONTHS! I’m already rather excited, especially after meeting some more incoming first years at last weekend’s Welcoming Day. If you happen to be a first year, make sure to join the facebook group here so you can meet others and ask some questions! Don’t forget to check out the frosh events closer to September, as they’re a great chance to meet people and start getting involved in Engineering!

Hope you all have been having an awesome summer so far!

For all fans of gaming at the cheeze, you should know by now that our Puzzle Fighter machine went offline due to a power failure sometime last month, and has remained so ever since. Instead of getting it professionally repaired, I’m going to be replacing it with a MAME system. MAME stands for “Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator,” meaning it can synthesize the hardware of countless arcade machines while running on a Windows or DOS-based PC. Everything will function like a normal arcade machine, but by opening it and doing a little typing, I can switch which game is available for play (or make the master list public). Here are a few pictures of what’s working so far:

The monitor can be hooked into any computer running special some video tweaking software with VGA-out, but right now the only method of input is a keyboard. I need to either build or purchase a keyboard encoder to get the joysticks and buttons to work with the computer, but that’s pretty easy to do. Any game that MAME supports can currently be played though. The only major issue I’m having is that even though the video signal is being amplified, the screen is still somewhat dim.

As always, arcade games are free at the cheeze. However, this system won’t be publicly available until further notice (not being done and all). Once it is though, come by for a round!

Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to give a quick report on yesterday’s Strategic Planning Meeting!

We have a great EUS Council this year, and we are all really excited to provide engineering undergraduate students with great services and advocacy in the upcoming year.

A couple highlights on the agenda:

-Update on the Engineering Student Centre from the ESC team

-An introduction to incorporation

-Great yearly plans from the incoming executive

-Discussions about Frosh Week, current AMS happenings, the EUS scholarship, and liquor licensing rules

-Ratification of new CM’s and Committee Members

-Good food and a chance to mingle with incoming and outgoing Councilors

Thanks to Dan Came for taking over Speaker duties and Graham (and Nancy) for taking minutes and running the projector. And another huge thanks to Amanda, Lin, and others for their massive contributions to the EUS over the last few years.

I look forward to a highly productive year with great results that benefit our entire engineering community at UBC

DAN

Hello everybody!

So it’s been a while since my last update, but here’s what I’ve got to say:

  • PAF T&C Round 3 is next week!  Results will be released and posted online on the Tuesday afterwards.
  • Transition to the new executive is coming along.  Ian, the new VP Finance, and I have already been working on next year’s budget.
  • Budget is available!  The latest iteration can be received by emailing me at vpfinance@ubcengineers.ca.  I can’t upload it on the website because the blog format sucks :(

That’s all I have to say right now!  Good luck on the last of your midterms e’rybody!
